Horses have a way of finding trouble. A fence line, a slip, a paddock scuffle. It can happen quickly, and often when you are not there to see it.

The first few moments after you identify a wound are important. Not because you need to fix everything, but because what you do next can influence how that wound heals.

Start by taking a breath and having a proper look.

  1. How deep does the wound appear to be ?
  2.  Is the wound in the vicinity of any joints or synovial sheaths/bursae or near the eyes ?
  3. Is your horse lame ?
  4. Is there active bleeding

If the wound is in a place that can be bandaged safely, a light, clean dressing can help protect it until it is assessed. If not, keeping the horse in a clean, contained area is often the best next step.

What matters most is establishing  whether a wound needs veterinary attention or can be managed at home. Feel free  to contact us and send pictures or videos of wounds to our emergency phone number at 0429934076

Wounds near joints, tendons or hooves should always be taken seriously, even if they look small. Deeper wounds, puncture wounds, or anything with significant swelling, heat or lameness should also be assessed early. These are the injuries that can become more complicated if left too long.

One of the most common mistakes we see is waiting to see how a wound “looks tomorrow” or attempting some antimicrobial therapy prior to seeking for veterinary advice. Our lines are always open to guide you through this process and helo you maek the right decision for your wounded horse.

At Willinga Park Equine Vet Hospital, we would always rather assess a wound early and confirm it is straightforward, than see it later once it has become more complex.

If you are unsure, that is usually your answer.

A quick call, a photo, or a conversation with our team can help you make the right decision for your horse from the start.
