Laboratory & Diagnostic Services

At Willinga Park Equine Vet Hospital, we perform a large range of in-house laboratory testing including haematology, biochemistry, arterial and venous blood gas profiles, and faecal testing including Salmonella culture. This grants critically ill patients the advantage of comprehensive blood tests, with results accessible within minutes. Our specialised team of veterinarians possesses the expertise to thoroughly evaluate and interpret performance horse profiles, offering tailored recommendations as needed. All other diagnostic testing is sent to external reference laboratories.

In-House Laboratory Testing

Our fully equipped laboratory allows us to perform a broad range of tests on site, including:

  • Haematology
  • Biochemistry
  • Arterial and venous blood gas analysis
  • Fibrinogen
  • Serum Amyloid A (SAA)
  • Urine analysis

These rapid diagnostics support the evaluation of organ function, inflammatory status, and oxygenation - crucial information for emergency patients, foals, and performance horses.

    Faecal Testing

    We maintain strong biosecurity and informed parasite control through in-house faecal diagnostics, including:

    • Faecal egg counts (FEC)
    • Salmonella culture

    These tests guide targeted deworming protocols and assist in the early detection of contagious gastrointestinal pathogens.

      External Reference Laboratory Testing

      Certain specialised diagnostics are performed through accredited external laboratories. Our veterinarians collect and prepare all samples on site to ensure accuracy and timely turnaround. Common examples include:

      • Airway and respiratory sample analysis
      • Histopathology (skin masses, surgical biopsies, tumour evaluation)
      • Muscle biopsy analysis (including PSSM, MYHM, and other myopathies)
      • Endocrine and specialised blood testing (ACTH, insulin, genetic assays, metabolic profiles)
      • Microbiology and PCR panels (infectious disease identification, antimicrobial sensitivity)

      These advanced diagnostics provide detailed, specialist-level interpretation to support complex medical, surgical, and performance cases.
